I wonder if the statistic includes those who don’t even go to art school but major in art at university. Percentage among the illustration majors would be interesting.

I really doubt that statistic, especially (1) if you go to a top art school and (2) have the accessibility and attention provided by new media. Times are changing. Certainly you have to be very active in making connections and joining societies, attending lectures and expos etc.

But companies usually shove the responsibility to employees, lol. There is no such thing as a godsend company that doesn’t do that.

So… if I pay 60 dollars will there be more than just your voice over a black screen with occasional white text?

“You will probably not get jobs from the work you do in college. It’s usually the work that you cultivate on your own that will get you attention.” I feel a ring of truth when I hear this. I’ve been thinking about going back and taking a class. Would it get me some portfolio work? The more I think about it, the more I’m certain that taking that class would probably teach me a particular skill, but that I’ll need to make several pieces on my own after the class to get real portfolio work.

You hit all the major points on how to be a great artist. Specially the part on research or the ” Wizards” I hear a lot of my colleagues and students who doesn’t even know who are the major players and companies on their industries. You are so right, how can you help somebody who doesn’t even know who Maxfield Parrish is? Great job! I wish you well! and keep creating art that you love. Mr. Meganck always says” If you love what you are doing, you are never going to work for the rest of your life”
